Victorian Attic RemodelAn open plan family room addition to a San Francisco Queen Anne’s attic

Highlights

  • Relaxed attic feeling preserved.
  • Perimeter cabinet work articulates areas and functions in open plan family room.
  • Insulation space makes attic comfortable.

Every house needs a relaxed retreat, and this ornate Victorian was no exception. The attic, a favorite room of the owners, had a problem common to many old homes: it was uninsulated. The challenge in this project was how to retain the rustic feeling of the original attic while providing the amenities that would make the space more livable. ROBA’s solution involved building a new structure beneath the old one and insulating the space between.

The new space became a Victorian version of an open plan family room, with a built-in entertainment center, wood stove and office.
