Every house needs a relaxed retreat, and this ornate Victorian was no exception. The attic was a favorite room of the owners, but it had a problem common to many old homes: it was completely uninsulated. The challenge in this project was to how retain the rustic feeling of the original attic while providing the amenities that would make the space more livable. ROBA’s solution involved building a new structure beneath the old one and insulating the space between. In order to maintain the spacious sense of the original attic, skylights were added, and walls dividing the space were avoided. Instead, perimeter built-in cabinets were installed in the low headroom areas to provide storage, and low peninsula bookcases and benches were placed to differentiate functions within the space. The result is a Victorian version of an open plan family room , with a built-in entertainment center, wood stove and office.
